Subaru Outback vs SUV Competitors in Bozeman, MT

The New Subaru Outback is Big on Capability Against Its Big Sky Country Rivals in Bozeman, MT

Lovers of the outdoors call our corner of the northwestern US "the Treasure State" for many reasons, among them, the trove of natural attractions around our greater Bozeman neighborhood. Mountain ranges as far and wide as Big Sky Country itself, dotted by dense forests and idyllic northern Great Plains prairies, lakes, rivers, lush valleys, rugged badlands - you name it, we'll bet it's part of what we call home. That's just the tip of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion, too.

To wit, you probably know that to contend with awe-inspiring of Mother Nature in our neck of the woods, it takes a special kind of seasoned traveler. A wagon built robust, as versatile for the terrain as the diversity of adventures you'll have behind its wheel, and yet ready, like a family-friendly crossover, for anything the everyday can send one's way. Perhaps most of all, a five-passenger SUV with the all-terrain command from driveway to highway and off the beaten path suggesting decades of durability and reliability under its belt.

Luckily for you, the new Subaru Outback blazes all those trails. The latest crossover SUV is spacious, rich in creature comforts, cargo-friendly, well-equipped with the advanced safety features, driver-assist tech, and in-cabin amenities for the trip, and perhaps best of all, fuel-economical for going the distance. But as many of its contemporaries can make the same challenge, we at Gallatin Subaru have made it easy to discover just a few of the ways the new Outback goes above and beyond even them. Once you see for yourself, we think you'll understand not only why our long-time Subaru customers love it, but also why they're more likely to step into the driver's seat.

Subaru Outback for sale in Bozeman, MTHyundai Santa Fe SUV

Subaru Outback vs. Hyundai Santa Fe

The new Outback appears in more numerous trims and better-equipped at key points than its Hyundai Santa Fe competitor and its SE, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate variants.

  • Only optional in Santa Fe, AWD, namely Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, comes standard.
  • Outback gets better fuel economy for the extra mile, too -- up to 25 mpg city to Hyundai at 18 and up to 32 mpg highway to Santa Fe and its 25.
  • Maneuverability in tight spaces remains the Outback forte, thanks to a 36.1-foot turning circle. Hyundai Santa Fe is a touch more unwieldy at 36.9 feet.
  • The same goes for passenger room and minimum cargo space. Outback takes the edge in front head and leg room and offers 35.5 cubic feet of trunk volume to Santa Fe at 13.5.
  • With five stars from the NHTSA for an Overall Crash Test Rating and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS for 2018, Outback stays ahead of Hyundai, which earns only four frontal crash test stars and rates only acceptable in passenger-side crash and child seat anchor evaluations.

Subaru Outback for sale in Bozeman, MTNissan Murano SUV

Subaru Outback vs. Nissan Murano

Outback not only outnumbers in trim options the latest SUV from Nissan, which offers only S, SV, SL, and Platinum, but it also takes the lead where it matters most.

  • Nissan Murano offers AWD, but once more, it's only optional. Opt for a new Outback, and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive remains the standard, no matter your choice of trim.
  • The same leg up goes for fuel economy, too. Outback offers up to 25 mpg in the city, with Murano at 21 mpg, and up to 32 highway mpg to its Nissan SUV rival at 28 mpg.
  • Our Subaru offering keeps the ride more maneuverable, too, with a 36.1-foot curb-to-curb turning radius to Murano at 38.7.
  • Outback is more capacious and offers more room and carrying capacity for cargo, with better front head and leg room, a larger minimum 35.5-cubic-foot volume, and a towing capacity of 2,700 pounds. Murano provides only 32.1 cubic feet in its base and supports but 1,500 pounds.
  • Subaru continues to excel in safety with an NHTSA five-star Overall Crash Test Rating and the highest 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS. Nissan Murano gets four stars overall, four in front crashworthiness, hasn't yet crash-tested for its passenger side, rates only marginal for headlights, and gets an acceptable grade for child seat anchors.
Subaru Outback for sale in Bozeman, MTFord Edge SUV

Subaru Outback vs. Ford Edge

Our Subaru crossover outnumbers the latest Edge from Ford six trims to four - Edge SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport. Where Outback charges ahead, you'll find Ford Edge behind on the trail.

  • As with its segment siblings, the new Edge lacks the turning and pulling power over diverse landscapes of Outback and its standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. For Ford, it's an option only.
  • Outback also offers a larger fuel tank, one 18.5 gallons to Edge at 18.0, making for fewer stop-overs in Livingston to gas up.
  • Plus, where the use of that fuel's concerned, Outback breezes past Edge. Count on up to 32 mpg down the wide-open highway and 25 mpg in the city. Our Ford SUV challenger makes possible only 29 mpg and 21 mpg respectively.
  • Try as Edge might, Outback is still more maneuverable, with a curb-to-curb turning radius of 38.7 feet to the former's shorter 36.1 feet.
  • Distance-goers in search of more front head and leg room for the ride will find it in Subaru Outback, ahead of the interior of Ford Edge in these areas.
  • Outback remains better for towing, too, supporting up to 2,700 pounds when compared to Edge at a mere 1,500.
  • Subaru takes home its eponymous highest IIHS 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating. Ford Edge is quite far behind. The latter earns drivers-side crashworthiness ratings of only acceptable, isn't rated for passenger-side crashworthiness, provides only basic front crash prevention, has a headlight rating of poor, and features only acceptable child seat anchor ratings.

Subaru Outback for sale in Bozeman, MTToyota Highlander SUV

Subaru Outback vs. Toyota Highlander

Head to head, both the new Subaru Outback and its Toyota Highlander rival seem evenly matched. Outback boasts a slightly longer trim line ranging from base 2.5i, step-up 2.5i Premium, and well-appointed 2.5i Limited to the long-haul 2.5i Touring and high-octane 3.6R Limited and 3.6R Touring models. Highlander weighs in with LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited. However, when it comes down to details, it's Outback that pulls ahead.

  • Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive comes standard throughout the line, offering excellent balance and efficient power transfer in tandem with our automaker's celebrated SUBARU BOXER engine. Toyota's mid-size SUV offers it only optionally.
  • Outback also gets better mileage, offering fuel economy up to 25 city mpg and 32 mpg down the highway to Belgrade. Highlander trails Outback on efficiency, offering only up to 20 mpg and 24 mpg respectively.
  • The new Outback is also more maneuverable than its Toyota SUV counterpart, with a 36.1-foot turning circle to Highlander's bulkier-feeling 38.7 feet.
  • You'll also find more room for luggage and adventuring gear in Outback, as it has a more sizable minimum cargo volume of 35.5 cubic feet and it's better equipped for towing, capable of supporting up to 2,700 pounds. Toyota Highlander offers a rather compact minimum of 13.8 cubic feet and a smaller 1,500-pound towing capacity.
  • Lastly, but not least, Outback is the safer alternative, earning a five-star NHTSA Overall Crash Test Rating and the highest 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS. Highlander takes home only four stars for frontal crash testing, and it's only a 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, with its passenger side not crash-tested and a merely acceptable rating for headlights.
